The second chapter of Aruitou is out and I’m not sure when Nanaji-sensei will be better enough to come back with the next chapter. She’s still on hiatus, focusing on her rehab efforts from her stroke. She has begun to update her Twitter fairly regularly, so things are definitely looking up. Continue onward to read!
We start chapter two off when Ou-chan drops Kuko off at her house (remember, he gave her a piggyback ride to her house since she fell and hurt her foot in the previous chapter). Kuko, as genki and effervescent as ever, laughs it off and tells Ou-chan that she’ll be alright, but then remembers and stops herself before saying that as Ou-chan told her that he would only worry more BECAUSE she tells him she’s OK. As Kuko struggles to say “thank you” instead, Ou-chan already closed the door on his way out…
Kuko thinks to herself that Ou-chan looks slender but definitely is strong and has strong, sturdy shoulders…As she’s getting sucked into thinking about the piggyback ride, she blushes furiously and scolds herself for being so perverted! “Idiot! Pervert!” She yells to herself. Then she hears the doorbell ring and she immediately back-peddles, saying to who she thinks is Ou-chan that she’s not calling HIM an idiot or pervert…Only to find out that it’s her neighbor who’s dropping off some homemade oden. Kuko laughs to herself for her silliness and thinks that somehow, someway, she was moved by what Ou-chan said to her earlier.
In the next scene, Kuko is walking up a hill and she’s cursing to herself since her foot isn’t healed yet and every step she takes is painful. She takes a breather by sitting on some steps when she sees a guy looming over her.
It’s the guy from before, who was cursing this town for its many winding hills. Kuko recognizes him and realizes that he speaks regular, non-dialect Japanese. She says to him proudly that he was wise in coming to her town for the school field trip, as the town is really beautiful. He quickly dismisses her and angrily tells her that he’s not on a trip, that he lives here, and that it’s a miserable town with its many hills.
Kuko is dumbfounded for a minute, then realizes that the way the angry guy’s going up is close to her own home. She then realizes what he just said and gets pissed and yells at him to not make fun of other peoples’ likes and dislikes and that he’s an idiot. Bewildered, he glances back at her and then Kuko nervously gives him an awkward, toothy grin. The guy just furrows his brows deeper and turns back around. Kuko, extremely pissed off now, starts going off on her way again, as well, on her hurt foot. As she’s painfully marching away, she hears the guy answer his phone. Kuko remarks to herself that his voice is completely different…That maybe he’s talking to his girlfriend or something. Brushing this thought off, Kuko tightens her ponytail and trudges on!
Now Kuko is at “Atelier Cafe Mumu,” which is where Ou-chan works. As a token of thanks for helping carry her home, Kuko brought Ou-chan some homemade Kimpira (marinated burdock root, eaten as a side dish). Ou-chan looks a bit worried and asks her if her foot’s OK to be walking yet. Kuko laughs and tells him, “Ahaha! Daijou–” And before she can finish, Ou-chan finishes for her, “–bu ja nai kuse ni.” (Quite translating note: Daijoubu means, “I’m OK/I’m alright,” and Daijoubu ja nai kuse ni means, “You’re not even alright,” or more figuratively, “Don’t say that when you’re not alright.”) Ou-chan then pulls up a chair for Kuko to sit. Kuko blushes and looks a bit flustered.
Kuko thinks to herself that from the beginning, Ou-chan has been someone who was a bit off, and that she now cannot say “Daijoubu” nonchalantly around him. Ou-chan then says to Kuko that she really shouldn’t be carrying grandmas and grandpas up hills anymore, that he saw her the other day doing this. Kuko laughs and tells him that Ebi-jii (the grandpa from the previous chapter) is light, so it’s easy. Ou-chan says that even for him it’s really tough, and says to Kuko that a girl really shouldn’t be doing things like that. Kuko looks at him, a bit surprised…
And…That’s it! Hopefully we’ll hear news of when the next chapter will be available soon.
