After a one-month respite, Minami-sensei is back and brings us the newest chapter of our beloved Kyou, Koi wo Hajimemasu! If you recall, the last scene of the last chapter was of Tsubaki bursting into bitter tears, not sure of what to do with her life and feeling like a failure…All in front of the new mystery-man. This chapter also brings back Kyouta (!!!). Click to view the synopsis + pics!
As tears keep rolling down Tsubaki’s face, the mystery-man looks slightly at a loss for what to do. He then reaches out and touches a strand of Tsubaki’s hair, shocking Tsubaki back to reality. She tells him not to touch her (she momentarily forgot that he’s a weirdo scam-artist) and tries to get away, when he says all of a sudden, “You have a caterpillar in your hair!” Tsubaki freezes when she hears that! He tells her to close her eyes, since when he brushes off the bug, it may get in them. Tsubaki’s trying not to freak out, closes her eyes, and thinks to herself that this day cannot get any worse. She wonders why he’s taking a while to brush the bug off, and then reminisces about Kyouta again, thinking how he’ll first burst out laughing if he found the bug on her hair, then brush it off without worrying that the bug will get on him, and pull Tsubaki close to him.
Tsubaki is overwhelmed with sadness again. The guy finally tells Tsubaki that she can open her eyes now. Slowly, she does, and sees her reflection in a store window:
Absolutely shocked, Tsubaki can’t believe her eyes. She asks the guy what happened to the bug, and he says that with his “magic,” he was able to change the bug into the flower that’s now in her hair (yes, that was meant to be a lame joke on his part…hopefully).
Tsubaki looks around and sees a flower bed on the side of the road, and figures that he got it from there, thus crushing his ego a bit. Tsubaki marvels at her hairdo and wonders how he’s keeping the hair put together like that, as she didn’t feel him clipping on a pin. He tells her that he’s using the pen that she dropped from last time, and that one pen is holding her hairstyle together! Tsubaki is flabbergasted and is somewhat amazed at his skills. The guy smiles warmly as he sees Tsubaki’s mood lift. He tells her that if the outside looks good, then the inside also feels good. He says that even though nothing may be going her way and she can’t see the person she wants to see, she should always take good care of her hair. He then breaks the serious train of thought and goes back into his cocky-comedy mode and tells himself that he’s such a great guy for saying this! He then starts to take off and tells Tsubaki that it’s OK for her to crush on him for a bit, LOL. As he’s walking away, Tsubaki asks him if he’s a hair stylist, and she remembers that he asked her to be a model…Was that for a haircut model? He stops, then tells her that he’s a stylist at the nearby salon named “Parfait.” He gives Tsubaki his card and for the first time we now know his name! Hananoi Hiro. Tsubaki is pretty darn amazed and realizes that professionals really are at a different level than her. She smiles and says that she can’t even come close in terms of hair styling. He observes her for a bit, then realizes that she actually wants to do styling herself. He leans over and tells her that if she agrees to be his cut model, he’ll teach her how to do the hairstyle he did for her just now.
In the next scene, we see Nako (yes yes…Many think she’s a complete bitch, but I don’t think she’s THAT evil) walking into the hospital where Kyouta is. Before she goes to his room, she goes to the restroom and nervously checks her appearance and takes a deep breath. She opens the curtains to his bed and she sees Kyouta, sweaty from walking around the hospital, surrounded by three nurses who are all over him! Nako is shocked (in a funny way) but quickly recovers and hands a stack of space-related pamphlets to Kyouta. As she’s handing them over, Kyouta cuts her off curtly and tells her that he doesn’t want her to come anymore and that he doesn’t need the pamphlets. Nako looks troubled for a bit but asks Kyouta if he’s saying that because of Tsubaki. She tells him that it was Tsubaki who told her in which hospital Kyouta was, and thus Tsubaki probably doesn’t mind Nako coming to visit. Kyouta then tells Nako that there’s no way Tsubaki won’t mind, because Tsubaki really likes him!
He tells her that right now, he can’t afford to even have the slightest hint of misunderstanding go on between him and Tsubaki, so he really doesn’t want to do anything that will make Tsubaki have doubts. Nako gets pissed and tells him that it’s stupid that Tsubaki is refusing help in finding her future career path and that she can’t understand why they’re keeping their distance right now. She then goes on further, saying that probably right now, Tsubaki is enlisting the help of another man (!!) to help her find her path. Upon hearing that, Kyouta gets pissed (VERY pissed), and says that that will not happen, and even if that were the case, he’d obliterate the “other guy”!
Nako looks a bit concerned and then thinks out loud that Tsubaki is looking really stressed these days at the cram school, so it’s hard for Nako to talk to her. Kyouta conjures up a mental image of Tsubaki, reeling from stress, and he immediately gets up out of bed and starts to practice using his crutches again. As Nako tries to stop him so he can get more rest, he brushes her off, saying that none of this concerns her.
Nako then pushes down Kyouta so she’s sitting on him, and says to him that he really disappoints her.
She tells him that finally, for the first time, she met someone her own age who’s obsessed with space, and to find that he is so easily swayed by love…She’s so disappointed. She asks why? Why is he so insistent that it’s Tsubaki? Nako then acknowledges that Tsubaki is a very upright person, but she wonders if only Kyouta had met Nako first, then would he love her just as much as he loves Tsubaki?
Crying now, Nako lowers her face to kiss Kyouta, but Kyouta says to her that if she had met Nako first, Nako would only have become a target for his betting game.
Nako stops and is confused by what he says. Kyouta tells her how he used to be like in the past, how he used to target serious-looking girls and use them and toss them aside after he gets bored with them. Nako can’t believe that Kyouta used to be like that. He then tells Nako that Tsubaki, at first, was just one of his targets. But for some reason, the “game” never ended with her. Tsubaki was able to save him from himself with her clumsy straightforwardness. Kyouta acknowledges that without Tsubaki, he would still be the horrible guy he was in the past, and that he only needs Tsubaki.
As Kyouta leaves the room to work on his walking, Nako is sitting on the bed, looking out. She thinks aloud that nothing seems to be going her way right now and that this is why relationships are a waste of time. As Nako gets up and places the pamphlets on Kyouta’s bed, we see her face, covered with tears with a bitter smile, and she says that the fact that she doesn’t regret that she liked Kyouta means that she herself must be foolish.
We see what Nako wrote on the notepaper on top of the pamphlets she leaves for Kyouta: “I’ll be back again with more pamphlets from lectures! If you don’t want that, why don’t you hurry up and get well and get out?”
The last scene shows Hananoi Hiro welcoming Tsubaki to his salon, greeting her as “model-chan.” Tsubaki looks a bit nervous, but she says, “Yoroshiku onegai shimasu!”
And that’s it!!! Great chapter, really. I was wondering if Nako was going to make a comeback, and she sure does, in a big way! I don’t think she’s supposed to be a 100% bitchy/evil character. She is just aggressive and knows what she wants. In the end, it seems clear that she has given up hope for Kyouta and now understands the deep connection between him and Tsubaki. And now Tsubaki will become even closer with Hiro-san! I can’t wait for the upcoming chapters!
OH, and yes, I also picked up the latest issue of Hana to Yume, which has the first chapter of the hotly-anticipated Liselotte to Majo no Mori! Look for a synopsis coming in the next day or two!
